Notes for MARY BROWNLEE:
She was initially buried at Merrickville and then moved to the 5th Line Cemetery, Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontaro, Canada.

Notes for WILLIAM KERFOOT:
He came to Canada as a three year old boy in 1819.  He was a tall spare man who wore a scanty brown whisker. He was quiet and well informed with a solid charcter that was typical of the Kerfoots. His father settled him on a farm in Montague Tp, Lanark Co about four miles form the village of Merrickville,  on what  is now called the Kilmarnock Road in 1840.   He lived there for the next 30 years.  In 1870 with his eight youngest children he moved to a farm of 200 acres three miles from Warwick Villag.  adjacent to the farm of his brother Thomas.  That farm was sold in 1882 just before his daughter, Eliza's, marriage. Thereafter he lived with his daughter Deborah in the village of Watford.
A history of the area, The History of Vespra, quoted from a his diary:
-Nov 1874-Burning heaps, roots and logs. George went to Barrie and bought five bags of apples at 65 cents a bag
-July 1875- John Kerfoot came up this morning and brought up the mowing machine. We fixed up scaffolds to put pulleys for hay fork
-July 187- Mr Geddes preached this morning. Horace and Mary went to Sunday School. John went to the English church and heard Fred Foyston preach. The boys, Harold and Horace, lost a swarm of bees.
-Dec 1875-George went to town with a load of hay, 2275 lbs in the load at $13.25 per ton.
-February 1882-Emma got Harold a pair of No. 11 boots for 90 cents and clothes for him and Horace. Emma got 22 cents for butter and 11 cents for egg.
Mar 1885-I took 12 1/2 pounds of beef up to F. Jacobs this evening, six cents a pound and I gave him $1.50. We considered ourselves square with one another about threshing and haying. T. L. (Tom) Livingston took some elm lumber to Barrie and got 12 per thousand.
His obituary read: William Kerfoot: was born in Coolcullen, Kilkenny County, Ireland, May 16, 1816, came with his parents to Canada in the year of 1819 and settled in the Township of Beckwith, Ontario. He was converted to God in the summer of 1832, under the minstry of Rev J. H. Huston. The work was genuine as his after life showed. He immediately united with the Weslan Methodists Church and continued a member onto his death (fifty-one years) and was a class leader in the church of his choice for eighteen years. Was married to Miss Mary Brownlee of Goulbourn on May 6, 1841 and settled in the To    wnship of Montague near Merrickville.  His wife died January 16, 1869 and left him with twelve children to mourn her loss.  In the spring of 1870 he moved to Warwick with eight children the other four being settled. The twelve children are all still living and all are members of the Chruch. A few months before his death he sold his farm and built for himself a comfortable house in the Village of Watford where he intended to finish his days in retirement but he passed away to his rest after a few weeks illness on the 3rd April 1883 and was interred on the 5th in the Warwick Cemetery. A memorial sermon was preached in the church in which he was wont to worship by Rev T.S. Howard to a vast concourse of sympathetic friends. He was one of the pillars of the Church and died as he lived, peaceful and happy, By T.S. Howard.

Generation No. 6

88.  THOMAS HOBARD6 SHILLINGTON (THOMAS5, JAMES4, THOMAS3, JOHN2) was born 29 September 1873 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada, and died 2 December 1964 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.  He married MARY EFFIE SIMPSON October 1896 in Ontario, Canada, daughter of WILLAIM SIMPSON and HEWITTA CHERRY.  She was born 26 September 1873 in Carleton County, Goulbourn Township Ontario, Canada, and died 4 April 1942 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.See a picture of Hobard and Effie Shillington

Notes for THOMAS HOBARD SHILLINGTON:
A minor issue concerns the spelling of his name Hobard.  In his later years it was always spelt, Hobart. That is the spelling on his tombstone. However three census records during his childhood and youth are unanimous is spelling the name, Hobard. Since these census records are earlier in time, they are to be preferred and the name is spelt Hobard.

They moved to Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in 1908 a couple of years after his sister, Barbara and her husband John Brownlee moved there. Initially they farmed south of Moose Jaw in a community called Petrolia, named after a community of the same name in Ontario. After a couple of  years Hobard sold that farm and returned for a brief period to Smith Falls, Ontario. See a picture of the Shillington family at Smith Falls. . Then moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where Hobard worked for the Winnipeg street railway. His wife, Effie, liked Winnipeg and urban life and would have preferred to have stayed in Winnipeg. Since she apparently never learned to read or write, she no doubt found the isolation of the prairies very lonely.  In her old age Effie would say with a poignant mixture of pride and sadness,' I don't think I did badly for a woman who never wanted to live on a farm and never wanted to live at Moose Jaw".

However the call of the land was strong and Hobard moved his family back to Moose Jaw after two years in Winnipeg. In Ontario he had farmed light brown soils which could be worked with a single team of draft horses.. In Ontario where there was a higher rainfall the light soils were easier to work and were therefore preferable.  Naturally he sought out similar soils in Western Canada. Thus, their first farm in Petrolia was in a district characterized by light brown soils. However in the semi-arid west, the light soils could not retain enough moisture in many years to produce a crop.   When Hobard returned to Moose Jaw after living in Winnipeg he had come to a better understanding of the challenges of dry land farming in Western Canada.  He bought a farm 16  miles North-West of Moose Jaw in the Regina Plains. The Regina Plains are formed from the lake bed of an ancient lake that had existed about one million hears earlier. It is an area of very heavy clay. The land was very difficult to work before the era of modern machinery,  Until the 1930's when he switched to a gasoline tractor, Hobard kept 30 draft horses on the farm. He would use a team of 12 in the morning. When he came in at noon  the heavy clay would have exhausted the team of 12 horses and he would hook up fresh team of 12 horses for the afternoon . However the heavy clay was able to retain the spring moisture throughout the hot dry summer and rarely failed to produce a crop.  Hobard was the envy of his brother in law, John Brownleee who remained in the lighter soils.

The 1901 Census confirmed that:
-Thomas Hobard he was born on September 26, 1873 in Ontario.
-HIs name was spelt Hobard on this census.
-He was Methodist.
-He was of Irish extractinon
-He was a farmer
-He could read and write.
-There were two children in the household, Laua born on February 1, 1896 and Arthur S. born on March 8, 1898.

The 1891 Census showed him to be 18 years of age and living with his father, Thomas. As stated his name was spelt Hobard.

The 1881 Census showed him to be 7 years of age and in school and spelt his name as Hobard.

For a description of the farm in Ontario see the notes on his father, Thomas Shillington.
