Canada, and died 1 June 1888 in City View, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

She was born 11 July 1821 in Beckwith Township, Ontario, Canada, and
died 26 February 1899 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario,
Canada.
Notes for JOHN S SHILLINGTON:
His nickname was Big John and he seems to have had
not only the physical stature but the personality to match. He
was the first of his family to have been born in Canada and his wife
was the first of her family to have been born in Canada. The couple
farmed the East one-half of Lot 12, 5th Concession, Goulbourn Township,
Carelton County, Ontario, Canada.
John was born on that farm. John donated the acre
of land that formed the 5th Line Cemetery. Both he and his wife Ann
are buried there. There was also a church built there which was abandoned
in 1877 when the present church was built in Munster. The house on
the land remained until 1950 when it burned to the ground. After
her husband's death, John's mother, Barbara, lived with John and Ann.
She lived until the age of ninety, a very old age for that era.

The 1871 Census listed his age as 48, born in Ontario,
a Wesleyian Methodist (as distinct from an Anglican Methodist)
and a farmer. His household consisted of his mother, Barbara, his
wife, Ann (49 years of age) and the seven children who were still at
home; Ann (21), Mary (19) Sarah (16), George (14) Wesley (12), John
(10) and Wiilliam (7). Sarah, George, Wesley, John and Willam were
in school. They had one building in town, There was a Methodist church
on their land. The farmed 500 acres, an enormous farm for that era.
Their buildings consisted of two dwellings, a barn and 5 sheds, two
carriages or sleighs, 2 wagons or sleds, one reaper, one horse rake,
and a fanning mill. Of the 500 acres, 200 were under cultivation and 70
in pasture. They had 9 acres in spring wheat. They had a garden of one-quarter
acre. Crops on hand consisted of 80 bushels of wheat, 30 bushels of
buckwheat, 20 bushels of peas, They had 10 acres of potatoes and 1500
bushels on hand. They had 300 bushels of turnips. There was 50 acres in
hay and 60 tons on hand. They had 10 bushels of apples. Livestock consisted
of 3 horses, 12 milk cows, an additional 7 horned cattle, 48 sheep, 4 swine,
3 bee hives. They had 1000 lbs of butter, 40 pounds of butter and 200
lb. of wool. In addition during the year they had slaughtered 12 sheep
and 11 swine. They also reported 30 cords of wood.
The 1881 Census listed his age as 58, living with
his wife Ann (59) with one soon William (17) still at home. All
were listed as Methodists and born in Ontario.
His daughter Barbara left this account in her own
handwriting: John Shillington was born on February 13th 1823 in
the Township of Goulbourn, then an almost unbroken wilderness. The
influences of a Christian home and godly parents prepared his heart
for the good seed and in his 16th year, attending a camp meeting at
a neighbouring farm, he was converted to God. Received his first quarterly
ticket from Rev. Geoge Goodson, May 1838 and from that time until his
death was a loyal member and liberal supporter of the Methodist Chruch.
He was married on the 24th September 1840 to Miss Ann Kerfoot of Beckworrth
Tp who still lives. He was called Home very suddenly on the 1st of June
1888.
Appropriately enough for such a personality, his
tombstone in the 5th Line Cemetery is a tall cenotaph that comletely
dominates the modest cemetery. His tombstone stands as straight
as the day it was erected in 1888

21A . THOMAS4 SHILLINGTON (THOMAS3, JOHN2, THOMAS1
KERFOOT) was born Unknown, and died 15 March 1903 in Mason City , Iowa,
U.S.A.. He married CAROLINE LAWRENCE 30 July 1840 in Edwardsborough
County, ONtario, Her parents' home.
Notes for THOMAS SHILLINGTON:
The following is a newspaper article from the Mason County Republican
March 19, 1903)
(Copied verbatim)
"Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound." With
these words of the Psalmist on his lips, Mr. Thomas Shillington breathed
his last at the home of his daughter, Emma Shillington Meyers, in Mason
City, March 15, 1903. He was able to walk to his chair at the dinner table,
but could not eat. The body had a little more work to do, the end was
nearing. He could but speak in whispers and in the ear of his loving daughter
he said his last words, and soon with her arms around him he breathed his
last.
Mr. Thomas Shillington was born September 28th, 1817
in Dunganon, Ireland, and the son of Thomas and Barbara Shillington.
When two years of age, the family took sail for the British possessions
of North America and settled at Goulbourn, Canada. They were among the
pioneers of that part of Canada, and the boy grew up to make his way through
dense timber, work in the soil and to endure all the hardships of an early
pioneer settlement. The plain living and hard work went to build up a body
of great strength, and the lack of general reading papers and magazines
to center his thoughts as the Holy Bible until its words were as familiar
to him as those of a child's first primmer. He believed every sentence
of the book as inspired, knew the exact wording of chapter
after chapter.
A writer in commenting in 1888 on the death of a
younger brother, says thus of the Shillington homestead:
"Known to many is the old "Shillington Home" on the
Fifth line of Goulbourn . Near this spot stood one of the first Methodist
churches of Ottawa Valley, and there was the first parsonage of the Richmond
circuit. In 1818 Thomas and Barbara Shillington came from Ireland and
settled there. Their home was cheerfully opened to the first missionaries
of the Methodist church. The family was devoted to God and the alter
of prayer daily remembered."
It was from such a house that Mr. Thomas Shillington
came. He grew to strong manhood, perfect physically, and with his powers
of memory, perception and observation strongly developed. He chose farming
as an occupation and was an expert in care and handling of stock. His
judgement on such matters, as recognized by his neighbors.
When twenty-four years of age he married Miss Caroline
Lawrence, near Prescott, and with her lived happily until her death,
March 22, 1859. It will be seen that his death, March 15, was near the
anniversary of the death of his first wife. To them were born nine children,
of whom seven are now living: John, of Sydney, Australia; Mrs. Sophia
Graham, of Chicago; James of London, Ontario; Mrs. Barbara Smith, of Indian
Ford, Manatoba; Mrs. Maggie McCarthy, of Thamesfield, Canada; Mrs. Carrie
Wright, of Manteno, Illinois and Mrs. Eliza Brown, of Arkona, Ontario.
A girl Martha Helen, died in infancy and Thomas died after twenty-five years
residence in Australia.
In 1865 he was married to Mrs. Alvina Morpley Guest,
at St. Mary's, Ontario, whose first husband had died leaving her with
four small children, who are now Mrs. Maggie Morris of Diller, Nebraska;
Mrs. Louise Howard, of Rosedale, Kansas, Mr. James Guest, of Dresden,
Ontario and Mr. George Guest, of Wakefield, Nebraska. His second wife
died at Denison, Iowa in 1894. To them were born four children, Mrs. Minnie
Foss, of Salida, Colorado and Mrs. Emma Meyers, of this city and William
and Harry who died after coming to manhood. Besides these boys and their
mother he was buried Wednesday in the family lot at Denison, Iowa.
The family moved to Crawford county, Iowa in 1872
and settled near Dow City. Later they moved to Denison where he engaged
in business. On the death of his wife, he lived with certain of his daughters
and the last four years was spent with his youngest daughter at Mason City.
Some of our readers will remember that we noted just
about one year ago the presence in the city of Mr. John Shillington
of Australia and his son John. About thirty-nine years before Mr. Shillington
parted with his two boys, John and Thomas that John might recover his
health which seemed failing, the brother going for company. The boys sailed
to England and then to Australia where they became pioneers. As mentioned
before, Thomas died but John lived and came to see his father. The meeting
of father and son in the roadway in front of the Meyers home in this city
was a scene never to be forgotten. They reviewed the days of the boy's
childhood. Later there was a reunion at Chicago and Manteno of all the
children of the first wife and father Shillington was there. The large
group picture then taken will be historical in the family for generations.
The presence of a godly man in a home was a benediction.
The children grew to love him and none have shown deeper grief than
our dear boy "Harry Frederick", who was his grandpa's errand boy during
the last days and who tried to support his faltering steps about the house.
Mr. Shillington had joined the M.E. church in Mason
City and a visit from the pastor on the last day before his death was
much appreciated. A private funeral ceremony was held at the home of Mr.
Meyers at 5 p.m. on Monday, Dr. Carlton and Dr. Rogers being present. Dr.
Carlton said a few words showing appreciation of the character of the departed
saint of God.
His daughter, Mrs. Sophia Graham arrived from Chicago
on the next morning after his death. She accompanied the family of Mr.
Meyers to Denison, Iowa, with the casket where a public funeral was held
in the Baptist church. His old neighbors and friends came out in strong
numbers to pay their respects to his memory and life.

Shillington Meyer)

22. THOMAS5 SHILLINGTON (JAMES4, THOMAS3, JOHN2,)
was born 3 February 1831 in Carleton County, Goulborn Township,
Ontario, Canada, and died 6 September 1902 in Carleton County, Goulborn
Township, Ontario, Canada. He married MARGARET HENDERSON 29 June
1854 in Her father's house, North Gower, Carleton County, Ontario,
Canada, daughter of JAMES HENDERSON. She was born 20 March 1833 in
Carleton County, Goulborn Township, Ontario, Canada, and died 10 February
1891 in Carleton County, Goulborn Township, Ontario, Canada.See a picture of Thomas Shillington with
his grandchildren, Sterling and Laura Shillington.
Notes for THOMAS SHILLINGTON:
After he was married to Margaret Henderson they
lived at North Gower until the death of his father and mother
in 1867. At this time Thomas and his familiy moved back into the
old Shillington log home that had been occupied by Thomas and Barbara
Shillington and subsequently by James and Eliza Shillington. The couple
lived there until their deaths.
1901 Census Showed him as a 70 year old widower,
living with his son T. Hobard. His religion was stated as Mehodist.
The census further stated that his occupation was farmer and he
could read and write English.
The 1881 Census show him to be 50 years of age,
living with his wife, Margaret, 48 years old. There are six children
living at home, Eilza (22), William J. (20), Barbara J. (18), Emma
(13), Benjamin (9) and Hobard (7). All except Willaim were single.
William was married.
The 1871 Census listed his age as 40, born in Ontario,
a Methodist, a farmer, and able to read and write. His farm was
Consession 5, Lot 10, 5th Line. The household included his wife Margaret.
There were four children in the household, Eliza (12 years old), James
(10), Jane (5) and Emma (3) . Eliza, James and Jane were in school.
The 1871 census contains a listing of the assets of the farm. He was
listed as having a dwelling or lot in the Town of Munster. It is clear
from oral family history that they living in the log house on the farm
and not in town. When his son Hobard came west to Saskatchewan in 1908,
the family still lived in the log house. As late as1953 the log house
was still occupied by a distant relative, Wiliam Tubman. Regretably
it was later torn down to during the construction of a sewage lagoon
for the community of Munster. The 1871 census states that their farm buildings
consisted of a barn and a shed in addition to the dwelling. In addition
there was a school house on his land with a yard, three quarters of an
acre in size. They farmed 200 acres. They had a sleigh, a wagon, a plough,
a cultivator, a reaper, a horse rake, a threshing machine and a fanning

32. WILLIAM5 KERFOOT (GEORGE4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2,
THOMAS1) was born 14 May 1816 in County Kilkenny, Ireland, and died
3 April 1883 in Village of Watford. He married MARY BROWNLEE 16
May 1841 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada,
daughter of THOMAS BROWNLEE and ANN SHILLINGTON. She was born 15
May 1823 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada,
and died 16 January 1869 in Montague Township, Lanark County, Ontario,
Canada.
Notes for WILLIAM KERFOOT:
He came to Canada as a three year old boy in 1819.
He was a tall spare man who wore a scanty brown whisker. He was
quiet and well informed with a solid charcter that was typical of the
Kerfoots. His father settled him on a farm in Montague Tp, Lanark Co
about four miles form the village of Merrickville, on what is now called
the Kilmarnock Road in 1840. He lived there for the next 30 years.
In 1870 with his eight youngest children he moved to a farm of 200 acres
three miles from Warwick Villag. adjacent to the farm of his brother
Thomas. That farm was sold in 1882 just before his daughter, Eliza's,
marriage. Thereafter he lived with his daughter Deborah in the village
of Watford.
A history of the area, The History of Vespra, quoted
from a his diary:
-Nov 1874-Burning heaps, roots and logs. George
went to Barrie and bought five bags of apples at 65 cents a bag
-July 1875- John Kerfoot came up this morning and
brought up the mowing machine. We fixed up scaffolds to put pulleys
for hay fork
-July 187- Mr Geddes preached this morning. Horace
and Mary went to Sunday School. John went to the English church
and heard Fred Foyston preach. The boys, Harold and Horace, lost
a swarm of bees.
-Dec 1875-George went to town with a load of hay,
2275 lbs in the load at $13.25 per ton.
-February 1882-Emma got Harold a pair of No. 11
boots for 90 cents and clothes for him and Horace. Emma got 22
cents for butter and 11 cents for egg.
Mar 1885-I took 12 1/2 pounds of beef up to F. Jacobs
this evening, six cents a pound and I gave him $1.50. We considered
ourselves square with one another about threshing and haying. T.
L. (Tom) Livingston took some elm lumber to Barrie and got 12 per
thousand.
His obituary read: William Kerfoot: was born in
Coolcullen, Kilkenny County, Ireland, May 16, 1816, came with
his parents to Canada in the year of 1819 and settled in the Township
of Beckwith, Ontario. He was converted to God in the summer of 1832,
under the minstry of Rev J. H. Huston. The work was genuine as his
after life showed. He immediately united with the Weslan Methodists Church
and continued a member onto his death (fifty-one years) and was a class
leader in the church of his choice for eighteen years. Was married to
Miss Mary Brownlee of Goulbourn on May 6, 1841 and settled in the To
wnship of Montague near Merrickville. His wife died January 16, 1869
and left him with twelve children to mourn her loss. In the spring of
1870 he moved to Warwick with eight children the other four being settled.
The twelve children are all still living and all are members of the Chruch.
A few months before his death he sold his farm and built for himself a
comfortable house in the Village of Watford where he intended to finish
his days in retirement but he passed away to his rest after a few weeks
illness on the 3rd April 1883 and was interred on the 5th in the Warwick
Cemetery. A memorial sermon was preached in the church in which he was
wont to worship by Rev T.S. Howard to a vast concourse of sympathetic
friends. He was one of the pillars of the Church and died as he lived,
peaceful and happy, By T.S. Howard.
