Families Numbered 1 to 17
Generation No. 1
1. THOMAS1 KERFOOT was born in Coolcullen,
County Kilkenny, Ireland. He married (1) MARY ?.
He married (2) MARY ????.
Notes for THOMAS KERFOOT:
Thomas is believed to be the father of George, the first of the
Kerfoot's to immigrate to Upper Canada. However, it has not been possible
to positively prove this. He and his wife, Mary, resided in the
right area of Ireland and are the right ages. The names, Thomas and Mary,
reappear in the subsequent generations, lending additional support to
the conclusion that they were the parents of George.
Child of THOMAS KERFOOT and MARY ? is:
2. i. GEORGE2 KERFOOT, b. Abt.
1742, Ireland; d. 1819, Nepean's Point, Ontario, Canada.
Generation No. 2
2. GEORGE2 KERFOOT (THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1742 in
Ireland, and died 1819 in Nepean's Point, Ontario, Canada. He married
ELEANOR ?.
Notes for GEORGE KERFOOT:
In 1819 he came from Coolcullen, County Kilkenny, Ireland, an aged
widower. He immigrated with children, grandchildren and two
great-grand children. They remained at Nepeans Point for a year during
which George Kerfoot died. The following year William Kerfoot and
his three sons took up land in nearby Beckwith Township, Lanark County,
Ontario, Canada.
We are indebted to Jean S. McGIll for the following:
"George Kerfoot, an aged widower, came with his children, grandchildren,
and two great grandchildren in 1819, landing at Nepean's Point - a family
party of eleven. While camped there, the great grandfather [George Kerfoot]
died. His son William, a stonemason, proceeded with his three sons George,
Thomas and Samuel to Beckwith Township. William Sr. located on the 4th
concession on lot 25 which he shared with his son Samuel, near the present
day village of Prospect. In 1824 he donated a corner of his farm and helped
build thereon the Prosect Methodist Church, a small log building, across
the road from the present stone United Church. In this Methodist Cemetery
are buried many Irish pioneers who settled on the third and fourth concessions
of Beckwith and Goulburn. The earlist inscribed date is "Hugh Conn, January
1830, age 39" who settled on Lot 24 of the 4th Concession and recieved
his patent in 1828.

this land for a church known as Prospect Chruch. It was built in 1836.

surname was Wilson. She had two sons by that frst marriage. It appears
that she may have been joined by one of her sons from her first marriage.
We are indebted to Rory Griffith who referred us to a reference in a
book, called "Wexford History and Society" Editor Kevin Whelan.
It is a collection of articles. This reference is from "Emmigration from
South Leinster to Eastern Upper Canada". On page 435 he writes: "George

his four brothers, and his mother in Beckwith". The reference is to request

passage:
William Kerfoot died in 1862 and was buried in the same cemetery
on his own property, where his wife, Elizabeth, who lived to be 93, was
also buried. William's son George [Family # 10] settled with his wife and
two small children on Lot 15 of the second concession in the Cuckoo's Nest.
Thomas Kerfoot [ Family # 11] located on lot 15 on the 1st concession.
William Kerfoot, endeavouring to seek wives for his many sons, made preperations
and invitied to Canada a very stylish lady from the old land, Eliza Phillips.
He informed his son Thomas that this lady would be his wife. Thomas, however,
had other intentions, and before his prospective wife arrived in Canada
he married Ann Tomlinson, the daughter of another pioneer William Tomlinson.
When Eliza Phillips arrived William commanded son Samuel to step into the
gap. And he did!* Samuels' wife was henceforth known by all the Kerfoots
as "The Lady". They lived in the house built by William on the old homestead,
a large frame building with a two tier veranda running the full elnght
of the house and decorated with "gingerbread".

Listed Thomas Shillington as a farmer, a native of Ireland, having
lived in Canada for 23 years. There were three persons in the household,
one of whom was John, born in Canada. He farmed 100 acres. He had 20
acres of wheat, 20 of barley and 6 of oats. There was 100 bushells of

Notes for JOSEPH SHILLINGTON:
The 1901 Census lists Joseph Shillington's birthday as 03 May 1818, the
Surragate Court. Documentation attached to a copy of his Last Will and Testament
lists his
death as 29 Jun 1904. Joseph sailed from Belfast and landed in New
York on his 21st birthday. He was the youngest member of his family and
was accompanied by a cousin. (no record of who this cousin was) Reaching
New York, after eight weeks and three days, the twosome set out for Upper
Canada to meet his brother and, thereafter, to find land. He took up a
homestead farm at the head of Green Bay in Bedford County, Ontario, a
location near the present City of Kingston. Here, it is reported, he literally
chopped his farm out of the woods and carried his wheat crop on his back
to the Mill. He also chopped great piles of wood for potash burning which
was sold in barrels for income. The family records of Joseph report that
his father, a brother of Thomas (Family #8), had been a landlord in Ireland
but had backed a note for a business partner who had failed. As a result
the father had been forced to pay, and this broke him. Because of this Joseph
had decided to come to Canada to make his own way. His first home was
a log cabin which he built, with the staircase on the outside. He married
Charlotte Bell, ( a relative of the Telephone Bell) and they settled on
his homestead, where thirteen children were eventually born. Like her
husband, Charlotte was of sturdy stock and it is said that she would sometimes
walk up to forty miles to visit relatives. Following the death of Charlotte
on May 24,1882, Joseph married a Mrs. Catherine 'Kitty' Bell, who died in
1897. Joseph passed away in 1904 and is buried in Salem Cemetery. The
McGill Digital Atlas' shows Joseph owning:
- in Bedford Twp, Conc 3 Lots 16 (186 3/4 acres) and 17 (166 1/3
acres)
- in Hinchenbrooke Twp, Conc 1 lots 16 (88 acres) and 18 (100 acres)
- these first two were patented grants from the Crown. He owned other
lands at his death

He is reputed to have frequently fought with Catholics whe n young.
This should be no surprise for the fighting wen t both ways, some folks nmore
